You will gain a great experience in learning all the instruments, procedures and technical aspects with the support of your tutor and colleagues of the Department.


The Numerical simulations Department is working mainly with Finite Element Method in different perimeters, such as occupant safety, crash, NVH, pedestrian protection, sensorics and closures. In addition, the department is also working with CFD methodology.


Italdesign is expanding its activities in the field of biomechanical and occupant safety simulations using artificial intelligence (ML) and Total Human body Models, to predict the behaviour and the key damage and severity values in Crash events. You will be involved in the work activities described below as part of a team focused on occupant safety simulation in crash.


Thesis project

As thesis student, you will be supported by your Tutor in order to analyse and develop the following thesis project about:

  • Receive training on PAM-CRASH, ANSA, Animator, and MetaPOST;
  • Learn dummy positioning, seat movement, and restraint system setup;
  • Simulate crash scenarios varying impact type, speed, and dummy models;
  • Perform sensitivity analysis, trend detection, and scenario classification;
  • Compare HBM vs traditional dummy responses in selected loadcases;
  • Create a structured crash scenario database using Design of Experiments (DOE) to explore injury mechanisms and biomechanical responses through Machine learning (not scope of this Thesis work).

The Numerical simulations Department is working mainly with Finite Element Method in different perimeters, such as occupant safety, crash, NVH, pedestrian protection, sensorics and closures. In addition, the department is also working with CFD methodology.

Italdesign is expanding its activities in the field of artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML), to predict the FE model’s behaviour and the key values, such as biomechanical accelerations and deformations of the dummy. You will be involved in work activities regarding the creation of a Design of Experiments (DOE) which will provide the dataset used by Machine Learning to find the optimum of the possible combination of key values.

You will be part of a team which is focused on occupant safety in frontal crash.

Thesis project

As thesis student, you will be supported by your Tutor in order to analyse and develop the following thesis project about:

  • Study of Finite Element Method codes (as Pamcrash or Ls-Dyna);
  • Study of frontal crashes and consequent biomechanical injuries;
  • Study and design of restrain systems;
  • Use of FEM software;
  • Creation of a Design of Experiments (DOE);
  • Use of ML algorithms to predict key values;
  • Analysis of biomechanical results;
  • Comparison between traditional biomechanical analysis and ML one.

We are launching a strategic initiative to build predictive capabilities that will enhance our competitiveness and operational efficiency.


During your Project Work, you will be involved in work activities regarding the foundational development of an AI-powered platform for project estimation and management. This includes analysing historical project data, defining a new structured database, engineering high-impact features from technical and financial data, and mapping business processes to ensure the solution delivers tangible value.


You will be part of the Project Management team, playing a crucial role in a high-visibility project at the forefront of the company's digital transformation. You will collaborate directly with senior project managers and technical experts to help build the system that will redefine how Italdesign executes future vehicle development projects.


Thesis Project

As thesis student, you will be supported by your Tutor in order to analyse and develop the following thesis projects about:


  • Conducting initial feature engineering by identifying and prioritizing key drivers from technical and operational data, laying the essential groundwork for the subsequent development of predictive AI models;
  • Analysis of the current project data landscape and definition of a new, structured database schema to create a "single source of truth" for all project-related information;
  • Mapping the current "as-is" process through collaboration with senior Project Managers and Engineers, and identifying key opportunities for AI-driven improvement in the future "to-be" workflow;
